hissing sound from shower pipes
I'm attempting to diagnose and fix a noise issue from my shower. It's a combination shower/bath faucet that you turn to switch between the two outlets. When the water is off, a persistant hissing sound emanates from the pipes. It can be relieved temporarily by turning the knob that switches it from tub to shower.
I received some advice previously to replace the "cartridge." I did not understand what that meant. Help anyone?

The cartridge is the part behind the handle that contains the hot and cold water valves and seals. It's replaced as one piece.... called a cartridge.
What brand of shower valve is it and what is its approx. age ?

Is water dripping out of the tub spout or shower head with the water is in the off position? If you are hearing hissing when the faucet is off and there is not water dripping from the tub's spout or shower head then I would also look below (downstairs, basement, crawl space...) for a possible leak.

I was wondering if you could give me advice on my issue. I hear a constant hissing coming from my hot water faucet knob. I have a combination shower as well. A knob for hot and cold and a middle one to switch the water to the shower head. No leaks in pipes anywhere that we can find or the plumber could locate. This has been going on for about a month now and water bill hasn't risen. I am however noticing a slight dripping from the tub faucet this past week. Could this be the culprit behind the hissing sound in the hot water pipe? Note: the sound stops when we shut the water off at the main valve and the valves on the hot water heater.

Do you only hear the hissing sound at that shower valve and no where else in the house ?
It's hard to believe the hiss could be caused by a small drip but it may be possible.
The plumbing pro will pass thru... maybe he has an idea.

Yes and nothing. Someone else on here gave me an idea as to what may be causing this. What do you think? Our faucet has always had a slight drip when the hot/cold mixing valve in the tub is turned to shower mode. The mixing valve knob is a bit loose might I add. Is the seal or whatever bad in that possibly? Causing it to not close properly?

If like most people, you take showers instead of baths, the diverter is always turned in the "shower" mode. The hissing is likely the cartridge that is not sealing correctly. Small amounts of water are escaping, but instead of coming out the tub spout, it fills the pipe leading to the shower head. However, the leak is not great enough to fill the tube to the shower head between each shower use. Therefore you don't notice the leak.
My theory at least. Replace the cartridge or seat on the hot side.

We found the problem - leak in elbow joint
We looked into the crawlspace and this time we saw water running down. We had to cut a hole in the floor of the access area behind the tub to locate it and fix it. But we finally found the problem, no more grasping at straws.
