Asbestos pipe insulation?

Does this look anything like the old pipe insulation that contained asbestos? I realize that the only way to know for sure is to have a lab test done, but I'm just curious if anyone with experience sees this to be suspicious. I recently bought this house which was built in the 50's, and the insulation around these pipes is starting to fall apart, and something needs to be done soon. Thought I would get some input here before going forward.

Yes, it certainly could be ACM (Asbestos Containing Material) and since you have asked it is now PACM (Presumed...). You are also correct in thinking the ONLY way to know for certain is by laboratory analysis. Since it presumed to be ACM you MUST have the analysis done before formulating a plan of action. Often the LOCAL health department is the lead agency for asbestos concerns.

Agreed... it fits the look and timeframe of asbestos insulation.

Definitely give a local environmental company a call. They'll inspect it, do the testing, and give you an idea of what options and prices you're looking at. From your pictures, it looks like a pretty small project for a licensed/qualified company.
