The water heater will probably be OK. What kind of heating is in the house? Do you plan to drain the pipes, to complete the work? If so, you don't have to worry about pipes freezing.

I leave the water heater if just a weekend trip... If longer I put on vac mode if gas..

Water line i simply turn off the main when I leave....

If electric I would probably kill power to it while I was gone...

Thanks. Its gas heat. Gas water heater.

Just to confirm, I don't have to shut the cold line off at the water heater or turn off the pilot (or gas totally for that matter)?

For a week, no, you don't have to do anything. Shutting off the water main makes sense if you're going away during the winter just in case there happens to be a power outage and freeze or a washer pipe bursts.

As others have said, I would put the gas water heater on vacation mode (just to save on gas) or turn off the electric water heater for the same reason.
