PVC is for cold water only. CPVC can be used for hot water. It may or may not be legal to use it in your locality. Check with your local bldg. dept. about that. The size of pipe you need is determined by the length of the run and how many fixtures are being served off of that run. Using 3/4" throughout the house would result in a waste of money at the time of installation (3/4" costs more than 1/2") as well as a bigger waste of water and energy. A given length of 3/4" pipe holds over twice as much water as the same length of 1/2" pipe. On the cold side, this is no problem. But, on the HOT side, this means you need to run more than twice as much water down the drain waiting for the hot water to arrive at a given valve. Using the smallest pipe possible will result the more efficient system.
