sludge out of washer?

Our washer called it quits the other day. While hooking up the new one I noticed the discharge tube was very heavy but no wateer came out. After looking down it I noticed it was plugged solid almost with a gray sludge. What is this from and how cna I prevent it? Im worried that it will mess my septic tank up.

I think the sludge comes from lint bound together with oils washed off the clothes and soap scum. I guess the good news is that the sludge is collecting in the discharge tube which is easily replaced. The bad news is that some of it is also being deposited in your home's drain lines. So, I think little is actually making it all the way to your septic tank. I would only be concerned about it making it to the tank if you are a mechanic or have some other job that makes your clothes very oily. Other than that I would be more worried about clogging the drain lines in the home.
