There is a cartridge inside the valve that may be blocked or damaged. Remove the top of the plastic handle to expose the screw. Unscrew the handle and remove it. (now is when I wish I could do that fancy picture posting that some of the guys do. Any help fellas?) There is a polished chrome sleeve that is on the outside of the brass stem. You should be able to pull it straight out and remove it. From this point on you will need to shut off water to this room or to the entire house to open the shower valve. The control cartridge is held in place by a U shaped retaining tab, you should see a small square about 2mm wide with a small hole in the center on top of the control stem. With a pliers pull this piece straight up. This will release the cartridge, now grab the stem from the end closest to you, from the very end, and pull. (You often need to exert great force to remove these cartridges so I hope you were paying close attention and are not pulling on something else.) Inspect the cartridge, hot water comes in one side and cold comes in the other. Also flush the supply lines that supply the faucet. With the valve removed have someone else turn on the main water supply for 20-30 seconds. Please be sure to stand back and close the shower curtain. This will flush loose bits of crap out of the supply line. There may also be a chunk of grit or rust in the hot side of the cartridge. If If this is an older house it may be prudent to replace the cartridge outright. Take it with you to the hardware store. There are many similar styles and you need to get an exact duplicate. Replace the cartridge, drop the retaining U in, replace the eschution and handle and put the handle in the on position for warm water. Turn on the main water supply. Be sure every other fixture in your house is turned off at the time. Let water run for a minute or two or until the water runs clear. Hopefully this will solve your problem.

The bad news, if this didn't fix the problem and you have older galvanized steel plumbing, then it may be time for a repipe. The hot side always rusts out faster than the cold.

good luck,

The U clip

and the cartridge removal

These are for a lav, but the procedure is the same. Moen is guaranteed for life. If you call 1-800-buy-moen, they will probably send you a new cartridge for free. Do NOT bother trying to just clean it, either call for one, or take the old one to Home Depot or hardware store and get a replacement
