I don't know if I am having a water softener problem or not. I am trying to manually regen it as we speak but lately my water smells UNSOFT and in the sink it is occasionally GRAY looking, any advice? I have salt in the softener and it appears to be working in the manual recycle mode. Does the gray water indicate anything?

Cool

Yes, it sounds like you may have a problem with your water softener.
The gray water possibly could be from the media tank (which should be exchanging that water (contains the calcium and magnesium that causes hard water) with sodium from the brine tank when regenerating.
The hardness of water has to be chemically tested, and the odor has nothing to do with softness/hardness. Odor can be solved with a carbon filter.
Call the nearest dealer of your water softener brand to test your water, and service the water softener. It could have clogged screens or ports in the head, or you can put it on bypass, and clean them out yourself.
Good Luck!
