Possible to use diverter valve tub spout without shower?

Forgive me for asking what is probably a basic plumbing question, but here goes:

I have an old delta wall mounted tub spout with two glass/chrome knobs. We want to update them with brushed nickel handles and knobs. We found a spout that has a diverter valve on it that looks GREAT. My question is, can I install this spout with this system? If I do, and someone pulls down on the diverter, what will happen? Will the spout leak into the wall? Will the flow of water stop? Is it possible to remove the diverter valve without damaging the outside of the spout?

Take it back and buy another one without the diverter.

If its tub only and someone activates the diverter, yes flow will just stop...
