Question

How can you tell if a thermostat or an element is bad? Exactly, how do you test the TSTAT & element using a voltage tester? In knowing this I want to be able to tell exactly what the problem is without having to go through thermostats, when all I could of done was change the element.

Cool

A simple way to test the elements:
1. Turn off power to water heater.
2. Disconnect the two wires from the tstat on the element, and check the element screws for continuity with an ohm meter. If there is no continuity, replace the element.
For a faster, detailed response on the proper step-by-step way to test tstats, please post this question over in the Electrical forum.
Good Luck!
