HVAC Guys Do Gas Piping?

We're building a house and our builder just told me that HVAC guys do gas piping. Here is his statement "HVAC guys are who usually do the gas piping, not the plumber."

Since we have a separate bid for plumbing, this certainly is not my understanding. What do you think?

As long as they have a plumbing license they are working under, then yes... But who taught them?

But IMO I would rather have the plumber do it as this is their learned trade and part of the test they need to take to pass the exam. HVAC trades dont need this license...

Thats my understanding anyway...

In Seattle, and I think also all of King County, Washington, the government gives a qualifying examination and issues a license for just fuel gas piping. No contractor can install gas piping without the license but anyone may take the exam and be qualified regardless of their regular job.

I have no idea of the requirements elsewhere.

I suggest that you check your LOCAL codes, you might be surprised. The Seattle ordinance requiring a gas fitter license is only about ten years old, maybe even less.
