Question

I was just wondering about the upkeep on septic systems. My house is 26 years old and was curious about how often the tank should be pumped, how you know it's time to have it pumped, and if periodic maintenence is required. Also, I was wondering if the over the counter bacteria products work well with systems, or if it's just a load of b.s. Finally, how much should it cost to get the system pumped out when it comes time? Thank you.

Cool

A septic system tank should be pumped out at least every five years. That's really about all the maintenance necessary. It costs about $125 here in Eastern NC.
If you have root problems, you may want to add a couple of cups of blue crystal copper sulphate root killer about every four months or so (just flush it down). It comes in inexpensive 3-lb bags.
All of those septic tank additives are a rip. Do not use them. Normal septic system usage should keep bacteria active.
Just keep grease and solids (cig filters, feminine products, etc.) OUT of it.
Do not drive or build over any part of the system (compaction of drainfield and tank collapse possible).
Good Luck!
