threaded connection question

Are threaded connections OK to take apart and reuse? Or once they are torqued, tape or dope applied, does taking them apart jeopardize their integrity?

Reason I ask, I am contemplating buying a used valve for a water softener... its an expensive part new and was wondering if I am asking for trouble buying a used one.

No. Used pipe fitting can be used again if they are in good shape. As long as the threads are not damaged its good to go. Pipe threads are an interference fit, meaning the thread gradually diminishes in depth as the run up the pipe. What you need to watch is on some poorly made imported fitting the thread is run full depth. These will not seal properly.

BTW...Technically TFE pipe tape is meant as a thread lubricant and not to be used as a sealing medium even though we all do it and it says so in some packages.
