Urgent help with leaking valve.

Hi I was woken up in the middle of the night by a loud noise.

Went to the laundry and my tap was blasting out water at about half it's max power.
The tap was fully turned off.

Does anyone know what on earth has happened?

Thank you.

Since we have no idea of where you are or the type of plumbing system you have...we can't help.

Sorry for the lack of info.
I can't post a pic as I'm not home at the moment but I'm from Australia. Not frozen, the tap was originally leaking slightly.

Its the cold water tap. If that helps, if the water supply is on, the tap will just release water

I'll be able to chuck up a photo of the tap later on if that's any help bit it's just basic. Similar to this

You say the tap is spraying water with tap turned off, not good.
This indicates a faulty valve, or in the case of a laundry, a faulty hose.
Do not expect to repair the valve itself, it must be replaced in all but rare cases. They weren't designed to be repaired.
Change out the valve and the hose. Probably what happened was the stem packing completely gave out. The packing is designed to prevent water flowing out front of valve when handle is turned (or in any position). Packing fails often. If the valve is rarely used, the packing rings get hard/brittle and fail.

You may be able to rebuild it, but hard to know w/o seeing it. Might just need a new washer and a bit of a turn on the nut below the handle or a new packing washer in the stem.
