Backflow preventer failed county test.

Got a notice from Sarasota Florida utilities that it failed. It's a Watts model 709 type DC. Is this something a homeowner can repair? Notice said to have a certified plumbing contractor perform the necessary repairs.

Most places, not a DIY job. There's often a separate certification just for testing and servicing of backflow preventers.

Many of the portable shelter systems my company built for the U.S. military (kitchens, showers, laundries, latrines) had backflow preventers (so as not to contaminate the countries we were blowing up, I guess). If one failed or needed service, a civilian contractor from the States had to do it. Pretty ridiculous IMO.
