Bathtub draining slowly and snake won't go through

I tried liquid plumber and then try a snake but the snake can get only through about 6 inches. Do i need a special type of snake to go through because it the drain doesn't go down but by the side?

You will need to remove the overflow cover or, in some cases, the stopper assembly. Then you snake down thru the overflow tube. Ive been very successful using a piece of coat hanger with a hook on it to remove all the hair thru the strainer.

There is also a trap under the tub. The picture shows a PVC trap. If your house is older there could be a drum trap or some other type of metal trap. The waste Tee is the usual source of
the clog.

When you pulled off the overflow cover plate was there a linkage or chain? Does your tub utilize the push type drain plug as Pete suggested? It is possible there is a drain plug stuck in the overflow that is partially occluding the drain. It needs to be removed.
