Removing one of two water heaters

just bought a house and it has two water heaters plumbed in. only one is working the other has no power going to it. i want to remove the non working one. but what i need to know is should i cap off the two lines going to the heater or join them with a union? one line on top of the heater has a valve and when i close that valve everything in the house still works as it should.

No way to know how to do it without having to guess without a picture.

Welcome to the forums.

If the two water heaters are in parallel..... cold to cold and hot to hot..... you would just disconnect the un-needed tank and cap the pipes off.

If you were to join them together you would mixing cold water into the heated water.
