Best way to block off drain for toilet temporarily?

I am remodeling a bathroom and am ready to remove the toilet, it very well could be off for a few months. What is the best way to plug the pipe to keep septic gas out of the house? I was planning on just stuffing rags down there but I figure there is proper way to do it. The pipe is PVC, 4'' I believe, I am not planning on removing the toilet flange.

There is no danger of water backing up out of the drain unless there was a serious issue with something plugging which is very unlikely.

Thanks!

I've only ever seen guys on jobs I've been on stuff a big rag in there that NOBODY ever wants to use again for something else.

There are also plugs made just for such a job. They are in the plumbing section.

The Plug is what I am after. I was at the depot this morning and didn't see them, but I didn't look really hard either.

Thanks!

I take 2 or 3 rags and after I remove the toilet and set it aside, I scrape the wax ring onto the rags. After cleaning my tool off from excess wax, I then fold the rags over onto themselves and encase the wax ring. I take this ball and stuff it into the pipe. It usually is too big so I use the flexibility of the wax to mold it to the correct size so it mushrooms a little on the top but clearly makes a seal inside the pipe. I have been doing it this way for the last 12 years.
