water quality - residue inside filter cage

I have posted about this before but maybe with a pic, I could get more insight.... As you can see I get some sort of deep "rusty" color from my water.
Sinks, toilets are not really an issue - We clean them enough that I don't see much residue, however, some parts of utility sink or other areas that don't get cleaned daily and even pipes suffer from this.

This picture is of the water filer housing and I change the filter every 3 months and every 3 months I also clean this entire area....
WHat causes it ?
How can I prevent it from forming?

Any ideas ?

Thanks!

BTW...there are no signs of this inside the filter housing or the filter itself....so somehow I feel this relates to pipes ?

Your problem is probably the same problem I have here..... high iron content and in particular manganese.

I have to use HD additives to keep it in check in the pool. The white fittings still turn reddish sometimes.

I have a large inline filter on my fridge that is red from the iron.

I have city water from surface snow melt. I have that same discoloration in my filter housings. It is normal and nothing to be overly concerned about in my opinion. Remember, the incoming water goes from the outside of the filter to exit from the core so as long as nothing is showing up in the downstream side your filter is doing its job.

As others have said, I wouldn't worry too much based on just a bit of discoloration.

If you're really concerned, you should have your water tested by a laboratory. They will give you EPA acceptable ranges and show whether or not your water falls within those safe ranges.

Just be sure to work directly with a laboratory and not a filter company. You can always work with a filter company after you know exactly what's in your water.

I'm on a well and have the same issue. The filter is doing it's job, don't worry about it. Clean the filter housing with every filter change. That will help cut down on the discoloration. As others have said, have your water checked by a lab. It it comes back OK, then you've got nothing to worry about.
