tub spout caulk question

I replaced tub diverter/spout with universal kind.

On the bottom of it (looking at it installed on wall) there is a
notch opening. I assume its where you would be able to get at
the hex screw if installed that way. If you look up at it from
the bottom you can see the copper pipe inside.

Can you picture what I am describing?

Anyway, I had a tiny gap around the spout which I applied clear
caulking to. But on the bottom is that notch which I did not seal.

Should I caulk that as well?

No, unless unfrozen water starts running up hill it's not an issue.

Thanks, I was thinking along those same lines when I decided not to pack that hole with caulk.

I would suggest leaving the hole open so that, if water should get between the spout body and the pipe inside, it would come out the hole rather than accumulate and soak into the wall.

I would go so far to suggest that, if there was no hole or notch on the underside of the spout at the wall,, to cut one about 3/8 inch x 3/8 inch.
