Aqua Pure whole-house filter leaking after cartridge change....

I've had the Aqua Pure AP101T for years, never a problem till today. I changed the cartridge and when I reinstalled the housing it was leaking. I've removed and reinstalled it several times now, cleaning and drying the threads and o-ring, and carefully turning the water back on, but I still have a leak from the housing threads. In addition to the unit's built-in shut-off valve I have a bypass with two shut-offs installed. I have replaced cartridges many times over the years without ever having this issue. Should I try plumbers tape??

You shouldn't need Teflon tape although you could try it in a pinch. Try replacing the o-ring; replacements are available from aqua-pure. Good idea to use plumbers grease on the o-ring.

Also, using a bright light, examine both the base and removable housing for a crack; I've had more than one housing develop a nearly invisible crack after years in service and they are hard to spot.

Hi eddie –

I’m not a pro but I would say you need a new O-ring. I don’t think you need tape with a good O-ring. You can buy those in a packet in Home Depot and other big box stores. I haven’t replaced the O-ring on my filter (mine isn’t the AP101T) for a long time but the last time I had a leak like yours I bought a new O-ring and that took care of it.

lol - just saw Carbide's post. I'm always late

Thanks as always for your help. I think I may have inadvertently pinched the "o-ring" gasket during my attempts to get it on and off, and that's what caused my leak. While my local Ace Hardware didn't have the correct o-ring and suggested I may need to order from Aqua Pure, Home Depot had a "kit" from GE with one o-ring that was "close enough," i.e. slightly fatter and slightly tighter. That plus the plumber's grease did the trick. The plumber's grease, for all my non-plumber DIY'ers out there, made ALL THE DIFFERENCE in getting the housing back on tight.

Ditto from me - good to hear. I think i did the same thing, got one that was close enough at HD and gave it a shot - and it worked. I'll have to remember the grease trick!!

Before getting the new o-ring, I kept trying to get it on as tight as possible. When it still leaked, I couldn't believe how hard it was to remove! I mean, I know the guy that tightened it (me) and he ain't all that strong! The grease made it easier to get tight, and I assume it'll be easier to get loose, when the time comes!

BTW, this particular filter change was a little late, and the 5 micron filter was so dirty it was affecting my water pressure!!
