Diverter handle removal
Hi all,
I am restoring an old house and the diverter valve has locked in the shower. I can't find an apparent way to remove the handle so I can get to it. The hole in the middle does not lead to a phillips or allen head that I can discern with a flashlight and gently trying the tools. There are no holes on the sides with an allen head. Thanks for any suggestions.

Those handles are on a spline and pull straight out.
As a last resort put the screw back in leaving it out some and use a puller to get it off.

Sure hope you also plan on removing all that old cheap wall board that's failing and is going to cause future issues.

Once you get the handles off there may be tubes that must also be unscrewed to access the stems.
You will also need stem removal sockets for removing the stem assembly.

Also make sure the main water supply is off, once it's off, open up the hot and cold valves to lower the pressure before removing the stems.

Thank you all, that makes sense. I was able to pull the handle. I have one of the stem kits PJmax mentioned and will be back down to work on it in July.

OK, I picked up the tool referenced by joecap above :
Faucet Handle/Compression Sleeve Puller-HDX168 - The Home Depot.
But the bottom of the hole in the center of the diverter handle is deeper than the rod at the center of the tool... the handle bottoms out against the threaded portion, and I can't get leverage for the tool to extract the handle. It's a good 1/8 inch short and there doesn't seem to be a way to extend the point of the tool. Do I just need to look for a tool with a longer shaft or am I missing something?
Any help appreciated!

Unscrew the handle screw half way out. Place the center pin of the puller in the head of the screw.
