How to remove a back flow preventer from an old out door faucet ?

I have had a back flow preventer on my out door faucet for almost 10 years. The preventer is leaking now. The problem I have is I can not take it down to replace it, I can only turn the preventer loose about 1/3 turn, then it stops and can not turn any more. There is a hole on the side of the preventer, looks like a lock hole, but it is all rusted. I can not tell what the hole for. Is there a way to take the back flow preventer down ? Thanks.

If it is a screw on preventer, the hole contains an Allen screw that you first must undo in order to remove it. Good luck.

Some of the backflow preventers I've seen have a screw that tightens and then the head snaps off. I've gotten them off before by drilling out the screw with a similarly sized drill bit (probably about 1/8" drill bit). Even if the drill bit hits the faucet threads, it shouldn't cause a problem.

Thanks for the information. That hole is all rusted, can't tell if it is a screw, there is no center hole, so no way to turn it. I guess I'll have to drill it out. I'll do that this weekend. will report back here. Thanks again.
