Hot/Cold taps reversed when washing machine running

When the washing machine runs, pulling in cold water for it's cycle (it's set to cold), the hot and cold taps are reversed throughout the house. The Hot tap becomes 'cool', and the Cold tap becomes 'warm' (i.e., not complete reversal or totally Hot or Cold). When it's done with it's primary pull of cold water, but still running and doing a rinse, etc., the Hot tap becomes 'warm' and the Cold tap is 'tepid' at best.

Could someone help explain to me what's going on here?

Water may be cross flowing through the valves in the washing machine. If it's a problem close the shutoff on the wall for the hot water feeding the washing machine.
