Black Pipe Union on Boiler?

I want to use a black pipe union like this on the return of my boiler. Is this a bad practice (because of leaking / high-temperature)? What does the sealing on these, an o-ring?

Thanks.

Assuming the piping is also iron, then yes you can use the union. There is no o-ring, it depends on precision machined flat surfaces mating to seal. So you want a high quality part; avoid the cheapies.
