problem with Pistol grip drum auger

Hey guys, for this snake:

https://www.amazon.com/Cobra-86250-4.../dp/B006LWC6QM

There are times when a clog is right under the opening of the shower and no need to use a power drill. Problem I ran into is when manually turning the blue handle of the drum, my hand keeps hitting the tip of the middle rod which goes into the drill, any way to avoid that please?

Mine doesn't have the center rod to power it with a drill so there is nothing to hit. Personally I don't think powering such a small auger with a drill is a big help so I prefer the totally manual style. If your hand keeps hitting the middle rod see if the rod can be removed or just adjust your style so you don't hit it.

Reason I bought it is because I have sever arthritis in my hands so I am seeking the most comfortable way to handle it. Guess i will need to adjust my grip or the way I use it somehow since I am not seeing a way to remove the rod.

Could you lengthen the handle?
For example: a short length of pvc pipe that fits tightly (this might be a problem) over the widest part (top) of the handle?
