Repipe with PEX

Should I replace by ~80 yo copper with PEX while I am replacing my 2nd floor bathroom? Currently, there is a copper that runs through a mud box that was used in place of backer board to establish a level for the tile in that bathroom. I really don't like the idea of the entrapped copper.

If so, is there an easy way to run the PEX through the 1st floor wall without completely tearing it apart?

Thank you,
SPL

Yes, I would replace with PEX since you have a good opportunity. If not at the minimum I would cut out a section of your copper and cut the pipe lengthwise to inspect it's condition.

If you currently have copper running through the wall on the first floor you can use it to pull the new PEX. Attach the PEX to the end of the old copper then pull the copper down. Obviously this only works if the copper is not somehow attached inside the wall.

PEX Pull

Thank you, I'd be pulling into a tight space in my basement so I feel that I need new holes in the sole plate... and a little drywall patch while I'm at it...
