what caused my cloudy water?

I have municipal water, no filters or softener.

Today I filled bathtub and the water was cloudy; almost opaque. It started getting clearer and in 5 minutes looked normal.

This has never happened before. What could have caused it, and is it anything to be concerned about?

Probably just dissolved air in the water and it could have come from some work done on the city mains. As long as it clears in a few minutes it shouldn't be any cause for alarm.

That was my thought also. When the water company works on the water mains down the road it isn't uncommon for our water to get cloudy ..... sometimes we even get bits of trash come thru

Very common problem. Most notably with water dispensers in refrigerators.

Once had a customer come in returning a water filter cartridge, complaining the water was cloudy. I tried to explain to him that it's normal air bubbles and will dissipate in a few minutes. He was not wanting any of it and said it was defective. I told him good luck trying to find one that won't do that.
