Lukewarm water upstairs, but hot water in basement

I use our downstairs shower to wash our dogs. Every time I do this, we have lukewarm water from all faucets/showers/etc on the main and upstairs levels, but there is still hot water in that shower and the sink in the laundry room. It stays this way for a day or so.

Does anyone have any ideas why and/or how to resolve it in a timely manner??

Welcome to the forums! Can you describe your situation for us a little bit? Where is your water heater located in relation to the downstairs shower? Is it a water tank or a tankless gas fired unit? Do you have a hot water recirculation pump installed? What is the capacity of the water heater, if tank type. Is the water heater gas or electric.

Its a 40 gallon, gas powered water heater. Its less than 10 feet from the shower downstairs. There is not a recirculation pump.

Do you use a shower head control to turn off the water in the basement shower while leaving the wall faucets on? Or leave a washing machine hookup on between washings? These situations can cause crossover of hot and cold water down in the basement.
