Shutoff valve leaks when on full

This valve seems to leak when turned on full. I have to turn it back a few turns to make it stop. Can the nut be tightened or should it be replaced? I don't have much spare copper pipe to work with there...

If it's leaking at the red arrow.... tighten the nut clockwise.... a little bit at a time. As you tighten it you'll feel the handle gets harder to turn. Don't tighten it too much so that you can't turn the handle to close the valve.

Why do they leak when on full but not when turned back a few turns?

When you open the valve, water will move around the seal to its destination. That same water will move toward the stem packing, which is in place to keep it from leaking out onto the floor. That is why it was suggested to tighten up slightly on the packing nut to compress the stem packing a little. When you open it fully you press against the stem packing and allow water to exude. When you slightly close it the packing can expand and control the water. It is totally normal.

Ok, so I tightened the nut a little. Now it doesn't leak when fully open but I cannot tighten enough to shut off and it leaks when trying to close.
Maybe a ball valve would be better? Is there a ball valve that works with a 3/8 supply line after for the toilet?
