Replacing Sewer PVC Cleanout - Adapter Question

I need to replace the sewer PVC cleanout and adapter. I went to Home Depot and bought a cleanout adapter with plug: NIBCO 4 in. PVC DWV SPG x F Cleanout Adapter with Plug-C4816HD4 - The Home Depot

I realized that it does not fit properly. My old cleanout adapter had two female ends. Is that considered a coupling? The adapter went over the sewer pipe, and the plug screwed into the top of the adapter (threaded end). The one I bought does not fit over the existing sewer line. They are the exact same diameter, so there is no way to secure them together. I am not sure if I bought the wrong part, or if I need some type of coupling. I didn't see a similar adapter to the one that I had.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

There are different types of cleanout adapters. Some, like you posted, are designed to be used with a coupling while others have a female end that slips over the pipe. I think this is the piece you want.
