Changing water pressure regulator

I checked the water pressure and it is over 85 psi.
I bought a new pressure regulator at Home Depot, and the overall length is 3 7/16.
The original pressure regulator is 4 1/8.
How should I close the Gap?

It turned out that someone swapped the regulator at Home Depot with a cheaper one. When I returned it, and got the correct regulator, it fit no problem.
The Home Depot in Anaheim Hills actually kept the pressure regulators in their cardboard boxes inside of plexiglass containers, so that people wouldn't mess with them.

A little late now but did you try to adjust the old regulator?
