Clean with brush or abrasive?
I've always used a brush instead of crocus cloth. Any reason i should try the grit instead?
Does the cloth leave a smoother or cleaner surface for soldering or compression ferrules?

Ive always used plumbers sand cloth so I guess it's always worked for me, not that I can say it was the cause of any known failure!

Thank you. That's pretty much what I did. I re-plumbed the sloppy work under my kitchen sink with new compression stops and was concerned the ferrule wouldn't seal on the scratches left from a brush. I've never had an issue with brushing soldered fittings but I'm sure solder flows into the scratches and fills small voids.
This was 40 year old copper with paint & oxidation on it that took more than the usual amount of scrubbing to remove.
