New house. FInally had a chance to try and turn on the sprinkler system (Atlanta, GA), After some troubleshooting, I figured out that the previous home owner had disconnected the sprinkler systme completely. IT looks like it was originally teed in right after the water meter and check valve.
I would like to get the sprinkler system back up and running but the existing piping is a mismash. I have attached a picture of the fitting. You can see the check valve and hand valve on the right hand side of the image. Those are brass or cast. Then it goes to plastic fitting a short piece of black plastic pipe (looks like Polypropylene) another plastic fitting, then to black plastic pipe that provides water to the home.

I need to restore the Tee that was originally in this spot and add a valve and line that goes to the sprinkler system (just off the picture bottom left) that is white rigid PVC pipe.

What is the correct way to plumb this up? Mainly interested in the fittings between the hand valve , the new Tee and the black pipe going to the house. If the Tee is PVC then adding the valve and connecting up to the sprinkler sysmte seem straight forward.

So the horizontal line is the main water line into the house?

Cant speak for your local codes but every house that I have had with sprinklers was required to have a anti siphon valve between the sprinklers and the main line.

Would not want field water being sucked into the main line!

 

I agree. No sign that there was an anti syphon fitting here originally. Does the check play that role, preventing water from the home from back flowing into the system?
Just want to make sure i do it correctly.
In my old home, I install a sand point for the sprinkler systme. Even that required a anti syphon device

 

Check valve is not the same as back flow preventer, low flow can get past a spring check valve.

 

An above ground pressure-vacuum breaker is required.

 

There was definetly no vacuum breaker before. is the vauum breaker installed upstream of the sprinkler shut iff valve. what is the best way to connect from rigid PVC to the poly propylene pipe?

 

It's down stream of the shut off valve.

You can get adaptors to go from poly (barb) to PVC glue or threaded.

 

Is it normal to have poly pipe from street into the home?

 

Just had a new service line installed at our congregation and they used poly pipe from the street to the meter.
