i think the main is a 1 1/4" fitting. do i put pipe dope on the gas main fitting coupler like the rest of the black pipe fittings inside?

Kind if a scary question. First time with gas piping ?

All threaded gas fittings need pipe compound.
CSST and flare type fittings are different.

well, it's a 1" fitting. since it's a threaded pipe i hope its a standard pipe compound connection. what's so scary about joining threaded black pipe?

You said 1-1/4" and 1" . Are you connecting 1" threaded pipe to 1-1/4" pipe with a threaded coupler ?

Connecting threaded pipe is easy. But gas piping isn't something usually considered DIY, though maybe more on the expert side of DIY.

You'll need to use pipe thread sealant formulated for gas piping (some plumbing pipe dope won't work with NG piping).

With a 1" or 1.25" pipe you'll need two decent sized pipe wrenches, at least 18-24". You won't be able to get a good seal with a smaller wrench.

no 1 1/4... i get conflicting info on doing this. One installer said use both tape and dope, another says use tape only. One guy said he's done many and you don't want to use too much force connecting pipe or will damage the threads... he uses a firm twist w pipe wrench.
Oh well, I ordered a pipe pressure test gauge.
I was planning on running all black pipe, but one guy told me to run pipe for the main portion of the network, then use copper poly pipe for all of the 1/2" branch circuits.

Around here, no one uses tape on gas pipe. It's pipe dope only. There's nothing wrong with tape, or tape and dope, but it's usually local customs that dictate typical use. Either way, make sure you use NG compatible tape or dope; not all of it is.

Black pipe is the standard for NG piping. CSST is newer and easier to work with, but requires some additional grounding/bonding. Soft copper is another good solution, but again is locale based. I never see it used in my area.
