Question

Water from the sink is backing up into the bottom of the dishwasher. The drain tube from the dishwasher is a 1 inch flex tube that goes from under the dishwasher up about fourteen inches through the side of the cabinets and hooks into a 1/2 inch verticle copper pipe capped into a 2" trap which is attached via a Y pipe into the main drain. Any suggestions?

Cool

14"?
Have you had this dw drain hose working properly without backflow from the sink like that?
It should be looped up as in this illustration.

Try that and see if it doesn't solve your problem.
Otherwise, you may have a partial clog in your sink drain causing the backup, and you'll need to clean out the trap and snake out the drain line.
Good Luck!
