Water main shutoff

Hello,

My question has to do with finding out where my water shutoff is for my house.

I am working on my sprinkler system and I had to shut the valve to the system a while back. I need to turn the water back on but I'm a little nervous because the valves/knobs are very rusty. I'm afraid that something is going to bust and water will start pouring out.

I don't really know for sure where the water supply shutoff knob is for the house. I thought I should try to find out for sure before messing with the sprinkler knobs.

The image is what I'm guessing is the water shut off. Is it ok to shut this off just to test it? I just want to know how to tun off the water in case the sprinkler knobs break on me.

Thanks!

If you have a well, the main shut-off valve is near the storage tank. If you have city water, it's near the meter( usually in basement).

Thanks beelzebob. I have city water but I don't have a basement and I don't see any kind of meter.

That looks like it could very well be your water valve, it can't hurt to close it and check that the water in the house is off.

Where do you live ? If you're in a cold zone the water main cannot be exposed.

Thanks Ron53! I shut it and it is the water shutoff- I've been wanting to know that for a while. I know it probably seemed like a dumb question, but I get so nervous messing with things I don't know about for sure.

Ahhhh...... ok. Makes sense. Then your meter will be in an underground pit or box out by the street,

You should check into it.... check with your neighbors.
There may be an additional shutoff in there too. Your sprinklers may also be tied in out there.
