I'm not sure there is such a thing as a "conventional heating system".
Is this hot water or steam?
Is it a coninuous loop or do the rads branch off a main loop and return?
Are the rads cast iron or finned tubing?
Are the pipes galvanized or copper?
Is there access to the pipes (basement/crawl space) or are the pipes in the walls?
If this is a hot water/cast iron rad/galvanized pipe setup, and the rads branch off a main loop and return, cut the pipes near where they branch off, unscrew the pieces of pipe from the main loop and screw in plugs. If copper, cut the branch pipes anywhere that's convenient and solder caps on the ends.
If this is a continuous loop, you must continue the pipe, completing the circuit where the rad was.
