shower install in home left unheated
#1
We live in northern Minnesota and leave our home unheated in the winter draining and winterizing the plumbing. We want to replace our shower and would like to install a prefab shower made of ABS which would install to the sheetrock walls on two sides so would be a corner entry or neoangle. Has anyone had experience with this? These are sold at Home Depot and Menards in our area but we cannot get a definitive answer there. Any help would be appreciated. One manufacturer of neoangle showers in another store has a warning that their product (ABS walls) may crack if installed where the temperature gets below 32 degrees F.

If a manufacturer's warning says that it may crack at 32 F freezing temp, it probably will crack at 32 F freezing temp, and they will have no liability whatsoever.
I think that it freezes in MN.
Apparently these showers are made for heated homes only, and you would be installing it at your own risk.
Your call.
I'm not a pro plumber, and I have no personal experience with these particular showers. Maybe one of the plumbers in here from the Northern climes can enlighten you about them.
Good Luck!

I'm just speculating here, but isn't there a whole lot of stuff made of ABS that is subject to freezing? I would think it should be OK, as long as it isn't being used at that temperature. If it's just hanging on the wall (not being flexed) it shouldn't crack.
