Arrestor on washing machine for water hammer

Hi,
4 months ago, I put an arrestor from a big box store on only the HOT line of my washing machine. The hammering stopped until 2 weeks ago. The hammering lasted for a week but I am doing a batch of clothes now and no hammering. I have not heard any hammering for a week or so.
Before I put the arrestor on, the hammering was very loud and consistent.

1) With the arrestor on, why would the hammering start up and then stop?
2) Is there any maintenance that can be done on the arrestor?

Any help or explanation would be appreciated.

Thanks
Brian

What arrestor did you install?

If it is a simple vertical tube that catches a pocket of air at the top they can become water logged (the air at the top is absorbed into the water). Once the cushioning pocket of air is gone it no longer works to absorb the shock of water hammer.

It is a $10 - $12 Sioux Chief from HD.
I am doing another batch of laundry and no hammering.
Why did it work for 4 months, not work for a week and then work for a week?

You only put an arrestor on the hot side. Maybe the hammer you heard was coming from the cold side?

I had to put arrestors on both hot and cold when I got my front loaders. It was rattling the HW Coil in my boiler.

There must be one on the cold side.
Cold water is all that's used during rinse and the valve is constantly being activated during rinse.

When I have the hammering, I physically put my hands on the hot side in back of the washer and I can feel the hammering. I then put my hands on the cold and felt nothing except water going thru the line.

Do you always need 2 arrestors?
