The pipe must be clean prior to attaching. Very often it could be cleaned with a clean rag. If the pipe needs more cleaning than wiping with a clean rag, it's best to use a cleaner designed for ABS.

Before the advent of cleaner we used to just wipe around the end of the pipe with sandpaper, just enough to clean and lightly rough up the pipe. Seems like failures were rarer than today.

I have never used a cleaner on ABS.
Always just roughed up a bit with sandpaper, both the fitting and the pipe.
Also always dry fit to make sure the pipe will go all the way into the fitting.
ABS tolerances seem poor as often they need more sanding to fit properly.
Then coat both the pipe and the fitting inside with glue then push together with a little twist motion.
Doing the above I have never had a leak at any join I did.

ABS pipe and fittings are almost nonexistent in this part of the country anymore, but back in the '70s when I worked around plumbers using ABS DWV piping they never used primer.
