Weird humming noise from my sink

Tuesday night there was a humming noise about the pitch a woman might make. After 20 minutes of running around the house I touched the Keurig and it stopped. Figured that was it and left it unplugged. Wednesday night it started again. The only thing in the area was the sink, so I turned the water on and it stopped. Turned the water off and it started again. On off. Then it was gone. There was no water running anywhere in the house, either time.

Any idea what is going on? Presumably the faucet is the only thing that could possible be doing it; but no water was running and it wasn't leaking, so i don't see how it could be making noise.

The faucet is a single handle; some European brand.

There's your problem! No, no... just kidding...

A worn out washer on a valve or fixture can make odd squealing and knocking noises, but only when the water is running.

Maybe the faucet isn't completely shut off and is letting just a little water through - causing the noise and maybe just a drip?

Next time you hear it - check your water meter? Most meters have a small spinning dial or the equivalent for a digital meter. Is it spinning at all? I'd also check in the room or basement below the kitchen (if you can), maybe the noise is coming from down there but just sounds like it's in the kitchen.
