I've been working on replacing the sink/vanity in my bathroom, and I'm near the end of the job. I'm ready to install the faucet and drain, and I've run into a possible problem. The plastic tailpiece from the drain is a little too small to fit snugly into the top piece of the PVC pipe (I forget what that piece is called -- the P-trap maybe?). Specifically, the diameter of the tailpiece is 1 1/4" and the inner diameter of the PVC is 1 1/2". How should I reconcile this difference? Do I just need to fill it with putty or something?

This is normal. You should have gotten 2 plastic washers for the sink drain tailpiece. One for 1 1/4 and one for 1 1/2.
If not you can get them at any big box or hardware store.
