water pipe diverter leaks

I have two water pipe diverters - these are the little things you screw around your water pipes (and then a sharp needle pinches open a hole in the pipe) to divert some water from that pipe - common for refrigerator ice makers. One of them leaks water into the diverted hose even when it is supposed to be turned off - so I can never turn it off (this one I use to refill aquariums so I don't need it on all the time) The other one is used for the ice machine but it has never been turned off in 25 years and when we replaced our refrigerator we couldn't even turn it. So 1) How do I get the one to turn off and not leak. 2) What can I do to turn off the second one without breaking it? Thanks

Those are called saddle valves. The are notoriously troublesome and are prone to leaking. There isn't much fixing you can do. Best is to cut out the little bit of pipe that was pierced and install a T fitting for your your fridge. Exactly how you do that will depend on the type of piping you have.

Agree that saddle valves are bad news.
Sharkbite makes a package that allows a slip-fit replacement for those valves. Depending on your soldering expertise, it may be a better solution for you.

If you use Shark/Gator Bite fittings make sure there is no stress on the fitting and the pipes on either end should be lined up straight. I've had Bite fittings leak when the fitting was under strain. Bite style fittings don't have structural strength like a soldered or glued connection so the pipes may need extra support.
