How do I take apart a connection of cast iron 4" pipe that has lead and oakum packed into it without breaking the pipe. The connection is on a Y pipe.

Take a torch and heat up the lead. As you do it will get soft. Thake a screw driver (an old one) and hammer and gently chip away at the lead. Once you have practice it is actually fast. This one take your time and the lead will come out. If the joint is horizontal the lead will run out. I also reccomend using a torch with acetalene or at a minimum mapp gas as they burn much hotter than Propane.
