Water lines in slab

I have a house built in 1955 and the water lines are in or under the slab. There is a poured carport next to the back door with a 2’ x 2’ opening filled with gravel . Would this be where the water lines enter the house or would it be for something else ? Thanks

It could be anything but a square is usually left like that for some reason. The only way to know what's down there is to carefully dig.

Do you have city water or a well? There should be a meter above grade if you have city water. There should be a storage tank above grade if you have a well.

Thanks , I’ll probably have to dig it out.

The water line entrance is usually a straight line from the meter or well.
Is the carport original to the house?

Be careful about digging in that square hole. Gravel under the slab next to the hole can cave in and undermine the foundation.

Not sure if original, but it is not close or inline with water meter so maybe it’s not a water line opening. Thanks
