trip lever (Old Tub)

I have an issue with a clogged tub. I'm pretty certain it has to do with the Trip Lever. It has a Spring on the end of it, but doesn't seem to do anything. In diagrams that I found, it looks it goes with a pop-up drain situation, but my drain doesn't have anything in it. It appears that something is blocking the pipe straight down from where the trip lever is. is there something that may have fallen off the lever, or could it be something else? Any suggestions. i have attached a pic of the trip lever mechanism.

Thanks,
Mike

You probably have the type shown below where a plug/stopper moves up and down inside the vertical pipe to block the drain. If your stopper is not attached to the handle mechanism it probably fell down inside the pipe and will need to be fished out. You can use a inexpensive borescope camera but I don't find it too helpful and just go fishing until I can snag it and pull it up and out.

There should be a cylindrical tube that blocks the drain. Not familiar with a spring being attached.
I'm thinking the cylinder fell off. Can you put a snake down there and does it stop at the point of the drain? If so try using something with a sticky end and see if you can drag it up and out. I'd say a magnet but I doubt it would be anything magnetic. Most likely brass.

Here's a stock photo of your type. Check the last image. Dis-regard my first post.

I'm at a loss. I snaked down about 2 feet or so and have hit something solid, it appears, and seems like metal. When I pushed harder with the snake it appeared to push down, like on a spring, just a bit. I'm waiting for drain to completely empty, so that I can send a camera down. Don't know what to do after that. I have no access but to rip tub out, and I'm not ready for that. Bathroom needs to be redone, but would like to wait a while.

Is this bathroom on a concrete slab? If this is on the 2nd floor or you have a basement or crawlspace you can access the drain piping from below.

That must be the rocker arm part of the stopper. See pic in post #4

You should be able to pull the stopper up and out along with the rocker arm.

I re-read you post from this morning. Are you sure your snake went down about two feet? If so then maybe the rocker arm disintegrated and fell into the trap area. Try using one of those flexible grabber things and try to grab it.
If that don't work the next step is to remove the drain from the tub using one of those bone drain wrenches.
Tearing out the tub is a very last resort and an extreme. The borescope is a good idea but it may not show a clear picture of what is there.
