Washing Machine Drain Hose Goo
Hi Friends, I am replacing a 14 year old washer. I took the plastic washer drain hose out of the drain hole in the wall.
The plastic washer drain hose was covered in black goo. What is this goo.
I don't have a back up now but want to make sure its clear before I get the new machine.

Don't forget the mold and bacteria for the lovely black color. Something's gotta eat the soap scum and human filth.
I would not be overly concerned. The black slime/goo layer is normal and is not harmful (but don't taste it). There are pour down the drain enzyme products that can help. You put them down the drain once a month the enzymes help even more to break down the deposits. Or, if it really bothers you a hand crank snake from the plumbing department can be run down the line to give is a bit of a scrubbing.

Also don't forget that all the pipes in your house are likely in the same shape. Best not to think about it.

On the outside of or on the inside of the hose?
Was the hose itself black in color?
Could be the hose itself biodegrading.just hanging behind the washing machine.
Not frequently but I have seen it happen. Tried to scrape the goo off and when I "got down to bare hose" the surface of the hose looked obviously eaten away.
