Finding underground leak of sprinkler system
There is an area (which is about 20ft x 10ft) on my lawn that is now muddy. I suspect there is a small leak in the underground pipes. I think if it was a big leak, it would produce a visible hole or pool of water. But I just have a very wet area.
To avoid randomly digging along all the pipes, is there a reliable way to pinpoint the leak to a more specific location before digging? Preferably not needing expensive professional tools.
Thanks

If you know which irrigation zone has the leak, and you don't mind wasting a fair amount of water, just let the zone run for longer than usual. Eventually, if you're lucky, the soil will saturate and a squishy mound of turf will form above the leak, like a big zit. Pop the zit with a sharp tool and dig right there.

Most likely the leak is at a fitting. Pipes do leak, but it's much more rare than fitting leaks. So I'd start at any sprinkler head or where there might be a tee fitting.
You may be able to use a mechanic's stethescope to hear the leak - but with sprinklers running, it might be too loud in the area to use it effectively.

Other than digging up the pipe, turn the water on and start lookin for the wet spot!

Yup - you're quite right Marq. Hearing dripping water over running water would be a challenge.
