How to know if water is being used?

I'd like to be able to remotely monitor how much water my house is using. I would rather not cut into the main water pipe upstream of the water meter to insert one of the available wifi water flow sensors. Is there anything non-invasive that can be used - something strapped to the outside of the pipe (ultrasound sensor?) or some way of monitoring the water meter remotely, to know how much water is flowing?

I would install a inline flow sensor downstream of your city's meter.

Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any device that can be installed without cutting into the pipes.

Some of the new internet-connected flow meters (that also have an app and shut off the water in case of a leak) have push-fit connections so it doesn't have to be soldered in place.

Another option might be a webcam pointed to your water meter, depending on its location.

What will they think of next!

I'm wondering how the Flume works, clamped around the meter. I know some (all?) meters click as the dial moves, I wonder if that's how they track usage?
