creaking water pipes

I live in a 12-year-old townhouse. These were very well-built, and there have been no serious problems so far. Several months ago, my water pipes started creaking -- not just once in a while but throughout the day and night. Sometimes, they creak for a few minutes. Sometimes it lasts as long as an hour. It sounds like clock ticking. I can't find a pattern to this. It happens when water isn't running or when it is; happens day and night; happens during the hot weather and the cold weather. I've called a plumber, and he wasn't able to help. Has anyone ever had this problem, or can anyone offer advice? Thanks.

Are you sure that it is your water supply pipes?
The only ticking that I've ever heard in plumbing is when hot water is run through plastic drain pipes (caused by expansion/contracting).
Could a neighbor be using hot water (dishwasher, washing machine, etc.) in a shared drain/waste/vent system?
If that's the case, there may not be anything to do about it, or worry about.
Good Luck!
